VIGANTOL tablets can be taken to prevent vitamin D deficiency, to support rickets prophylaxis and osteoporosis therapy. The tablets contain vitamin D3 (colecalciferol). Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin and is important, among other things, for calicum balance, bone mineralization and the immune system. It is partly absorbed through food (fatty fish, egg), but the greater part is formed in the skin under UV radiation.

Vitamin D deficiency can lead to increased susceptibility to infections, fatigue, muscle weakness, aching limbs, impaired bone mineralization (rickets in children, osteomalacia in adults) and problems with calcium balance.

Indications for use of VIGANTOL 1000 I.U.:

For prevention of rickets (disorders of bone mineralization at growing age).

For prevention in cases of recognizable risk of vitamin D deficiency disease in otherwise healthy persons without absorption disorder (disorder of absorption of vitamin D in the intestine).

For supportive treatment of osteoporosis (breakdown of bone tissue).

Prophylaxis of rickets (calcification disorders of the skeleton at growing age):

½ tablet of VIGANTOL1000 I.U.

In premature infants, 1 tablet of VIGANTOL 1000 I.U. daily is recommended. However, the dose is to be prescribed by the attending physician.

Prophylaxis of vitamin D deficiency disease:

½ tablet of VIGANTOL 1000 I.U. (equivalent to 500 I.U. of vitamin D).

A vitamin D deficiency can lead to increased susceptibility to infections, tiredness, muscle weakness, aching limbs, impaired bone mineralization (rickets in children, osteomalacia in adults) and problems with the calcium balance.

Dosage of VIGANTOL 1000 I.U. vitamin D3 tablets:

Take ½ -1 tablet

The tablets are best taken with a meal, as it is a fat-soluble vitamin.

Instructions for use

Do not exceed the total dose without consulting your doctor or pharmacist.

How to use it?
Older children and adults: take with a liquid (e.g. 1 glass of water). Children and infants: dissolve the medicine in a teaspoonful in a little water. The dissolved tablet may be administered directly into the child's mouth.

Length of use? The duration of use depends on the nature of the condition and/or duration of illness and is therefore determined solely by the physician. To prevent rickets, the drug is administered to infants from the second week of life until the end of the first year. From the age of 2 years, additional doses are recommended, especially during the winter months.

Overdose? Overdose can cause increased blood calcium levels with cardiac arrhythmias, thirst, dehydration, weakness or frailty, decreased consciousness and calcium deposits in blood vessels and tissues. If overdose is suspected, contact a doctor immediately.

As a general rule: pay close attention to the correct dosage, especially in infants, young children and the elderly. If in doubt, ask your doctor or pharmacist about any effects or precautions.

Mode of action

How does the active ingredient of the drug act?

The active ingredient acts on protein production. It triggers the formation of a protein that binds to calcium and releases it into the bloodstream. As a result, blood calcium levels increase and this calcium is available for bone formation.

Lebensjahr sind weitere Gaben, insbesondere in den Wintermonaten, zu empfehlen.

Überdosierung?
Bei einer Überdosierung kann es unter anderem zu erhöhten Kalziumwerten im Blut mit Herzrhythmusstörungen, Durst, Flüssigkeitsmangel, Kraftlosigkeit bzw. Schwäche, Bewustseinsstörungen sowie zu Kalziumablagerungen in Gefäßen und im Gewebe kommen. Setzen Sie sich bei dem Verdacht auf eine Überdosierung umgehend mit einem Arzt in Verbindung.

Generell gilt: Achten Sie vor allem bei Säuglingen, Kleinkindern und älteren Menschen auf eine gewissenhafte Dosierung. Im Zweifelsfalle fragen Sie Ihren Arzt oder Apotheker nach etwaigen Auswirkungen oder Vorsichtsmaßnahmen.

Mode of action

Wie wirkt der Inhaltsstoff des Arzneimittels?

Der Wirkstoff greift in der Proteinherstellung ein. Er löst die Bildung eines Proteins aus, welches Kalzium an sich bindet und an die Blutbahn abgibt. Auf diesem Wege wird der Blutkalziumspiegel erhöht, dieses Kalzium steht dann wiederum für den Knochenaufbau zur Verfügung.
