The beginning of autumn in the calendar marks the end of summer and the beginning of fall. Autumn now begins in the northern hemisphere, while in the southern hemisphere it starts in March.
This time of year not only brings cooler temperatures and shorter days, but often also a special mood: a mixture of pensiveness and quiet melancholy. The lack of sunlight lowers serotonin levels - which can affect our mood.
But this is also an opportunity. Autumn invites us to pause, take stock and set new goals. Skin care in summer - how to keep your skin healthy and radiant!
We give you tips
Our tips will show you how to optimally care for and protect your skin in summer.
1 - Sun protection is the most important step
The sun is good for us - it lifts our mood and ensures the production of vitamin D.
But too much sunlight can damage the skin. UVA and UVB rays in particular are very strong in summer and can age the skin more quickly, cause sunburn and even increase the risk of skin cancer in the long term. Daily sun protection is therefore essential, even when it is cloudy - because UV rays penetrate even thin layers of cloud. It is best to use a sun cream ( sun cream 50+ ) with sun protection factor 30 or 50 to reliably protect your skin.
For the face and décolleté, we recommend light, non-greasy products that are quickly absorbed and do not leave an unpleasant film - so your skin feels fresh and nourished even in the heat.

2 - Light care instead of heavy creams
Our skin has completely different needs in summer than in winter. Heat and sweating often cause it to produce more sebum and feel "heavy" or oily more quickly. Rich, greasy creams can then be too much of a good thing - they sit on the skin, clog the pores and often make it shiny. That's why you should opt for light textures such as fluids, gels or emulsions that are quickly absorbed and intensively moisturize without being greasy. Care products with hyaluronic acid, aloe vera or glycerine are particularly suitable
( from our pharamcy )– they help the skin to maintain its natural moisture balance.
Extra tip: Store your moisturizing spray in the fridge - this provides a refreshing kick between uses.
3. cleaning - gentle but thorough
Sweat, sun cream and sebum clog the pores more quickly. Therefore, use a moisturizer in the morning and evening. mild cleansing,
that does not dry out the skin.Gentle exfoliation 1-2 times a week helps to remove dead skin cells and prevents blemishes.
4. after-sun care - soothing for sun-stressed skin
After a day in the sun, your skin will look forward to soothing care. After-sun products with panthenol, aloe vera or allantoin (Order here) cool, moisturize and promote skin regeneration. The following applies to sunburn: cool, protect and hydrate the skin well - and seek advice from the pharmacy if the symptoms are more severe.
5. do not forget to drink
Beautiful skin also comes from within. In summer, the body needs more fluids. Drink at least 1.5-2 liters of water or unsweetened tea every day to provide the skin cells with sufficient moisture.

Our dear Nurdan, who works here as a pharmaceutical business assistant, had a birthday last week and gave us a lot of presents for her birthday.
We were served a total of 4 different treats.
Two mole cakes in the flavors strawberry and banana, dates covered with chocolate and white chocolate as a topping with Dubai chocolate filling (pistachio cream with roasted Kadayıf or also called angel hair, so fine, thread-like dough threads made of flour and water, these are baked crispy or roasted and then incorporated into creamy chocolate) or nut nougat filling and a cheesecake with pistachio pieces as a topping.

Bachelor degree
The Bachelor is done
Our working student Nadine has completed her bachelor's degree
Nadine has been part of our team as a working student since April 2024 while she pursues her psychology degree.
She works 20 hours a week with us and also supports us as much as her studies allow. She actively contributes her psychological knowledge to the work.
Nadine writes the blog posts under "Emmerich News", takes care of shop-related tasks and also handles DHL returns.
With her positive and open-minded manner, she brings lightness and joy to our everyday work and enriches the team in a very special way.
After six intensive semesters, Nadine has now successfully completed her Bachelor's degree in General Psychology.
We are delighted to have her with us in the future and hope that we will be able to celebrate her Master's degree in two years' time

Happy New Year!
The year 2025 is just around the corner.
Tomorrow, we will traditionally celebrate the arrival of the new year
I hope you had a wonderful Christmas, enjoyed lots of gifts, and spent quality time with your family.
As 2024 comes to a close, it has been a year full of events and changes. A significant moment was the expansion of our delivery area to Elten, as the local pharmacy closed, and we were able to offer our delivery service to this region. In the second quarter of the year, our pharmacy was given a fresh new look after an extensive renovation: modern wood panels and electronic screens, where we can now present our product selections, provide a more pleasant shopping experience. We also introduced a new pharmacy shirt for our employees in white and petrol colors, which complements the fresh appearance of the pharmacy. In addition, the cabinets where materials like bandages are stored were re-wrapped to match the new design of the pharmacy.
The summer brought the UEFA Euro 2024, with Germany participating. Together with our customers, we cheered on the national football team. Another highlight was that Bea successfully completed her training as a PKA, strengthening our pharmacy team with her support. In August, we expanded our shipping area with additional bins to accommodate more orders for our online store, "Arzneiprivat."
A particularly joyful occasion was the news that our dear colleague Linda was expecting a baby. She went on maternity leave in September and has since given birth to a healthy child. Furthermore, there were some changes in our team during 2024: Some colleagues left, while we welcomed wonderful new team members, including Pina, Antonio, and Natalia, who have been a great addition to our team.
At the end of the year, we held our annual Christmas party — but this time, it wasn't in the pharmacy. Instead, we gathered in a lovely venue outside of the pharmacy. We enjoyed an unforgettable evening filled with delicious food, drinks, and great company. Also, in our Sonnen-Apotheke, our customers had the opportunity to win gifts with an Advent calendar and celebrate the Advent season with us.
Now, on the penultimate day of the year, I look back on a year full of learning and adventure. We are grateful for all the experiences and are happy to have welcomed you as customers. It has been a pleasure to accompany you during this time, and we look forward to hearing from you again soon.

Christmas party 2024
This year's Christmas party took place on 29.11.2024
Here you can see some insights
This year's Christmas party did not take place in the pharmacy as usual, but in the cozy restaurant “Am halben Mond”.
The change of location was also due to the new organization team, which had changed compared to previous years.
The celebration began with a relaxed get-together outside by the fire basket, where mulled wine and toasted bread with various dips were served.
This was followed by the Christmas dinner starter: a delicious potato soup and chicken broth with egg garnish. Before the main course was served, the guests had lots of fun in front of the photo box, where they had their pictures taken with festive Christmas accessories.
As the evening progressed, there was plenty of laughter and dancing, and the first real Christmas spirit was established in November.
In between, there was a small raffle and everyone received a small gift as a memento of this wonderful evening.
We had an enchanting pre-Christmas celebration and were delighted to spend this evening together, we are already looking forward to next year.

We have a new cleaner
She cooked for us last week
A few weeks ago we welcomed Pina to our team.
She is our dedicated cleaner and makes sure that everything in the pharmacy always looks spotless and inviting.
But Pina is not only a real asset when it comes to cleanliness - she is also Italian and surprised us last week with a very special gesture:
She let us share in her Italian roots with her homemade cannelloni and tiramisu! The food she conjured up for us was excellent - every bite was a delight.
We were delighted that she shared this culinary treasure with us.
It is a pleasure to have Pina in our team.
With her Italian charm and warm manner, she not only enriches our everyday working life in the pharmacy,

World Pharmacy Technician Day
Every third Tuesday in October, the work of PTAs is honoured and celebrated
We celebrated the day with delicious pastries and cakes from the bakery.
When Bea brought the breakfast rolls this morning, she had a few more bags with her than usual.
The reason for this was the cake and treats she had brought with her to mark World PTA Day.
The aim of PTA Day is to highlight the work of PTAs worldwide and emphasise their importance in the healthcare system.
The aim of World Pharmaceutical Technical Assistants Day is to create a movement that
change the attitudes of patients, pharmacists and even PTAs to recognise their true value and influence
in the pharmacy. The day was celebrated this year under the theme ‘More than just a technician’.
On this day, we especially celebrated our PTAs Lisa, Andrea, Agnes, Ines, Christiane, Isabell and the boss and are very grateful,
that they enrich our pharmacy every day.

At the end of September, we organized a small farewell party for you.

The human body consists of 65% water, which is why we should make sure we drink enough fluids every day.
Doctors therefore recommend drinking around 2-4 liters.
Drinking enough water helps to keep the skin looking young and firm, as the skin cells are supplied with sufficient fluid.

Headaches are a widespread illness that almost everyone is familiar with.
The two most common types of headache are tension headaches and migraines, which account for around 90% of headache disorders.

Today we would like to explain to you what the letters Q,R,S and T stand for
Q= Quality
Quality is particularly important to us.
Here you can see my colleague making the capsules.
The capsules are all weighed individually after filling to check the weight.
This ensures that all capsules are filled evenly.
R=prescription
There are various types of prescription in the pharmacy, but we will not list them all here.
There is the pink prescription (sample 16 prescription), which is the most common and is valid for 28 days.
There is now also the e-prescription, which can be redeemed in all pharmacies and is stored on your insurance card.
Then there are three-part yellow narcotic prescriptions (BTM prescriptions), one part of which the doctor keeps, the other two parts are presented at the pharmacy.
BTM prescriptions are valid for 8 days including the date of issue.
Private prescriptions are valid for 3 months.

Our expansion
Our shelving in the dispatch area has been extended
Thanks to the extended shelves, all our tubs now have an organized place in our shipping area.
In the picture below you can only see the extended section of tubs. There is space for 400 tubs in our entire tub rack.
To explain: each tub stands for one order, which means that we often have all tubs fully booked.
A good tub system and an existing order in it is enormously important for the store and the associated shipping department to keep an overview and to be able to assign goods to each order.

Tips against mosquito bites
There are currently quite a few mosquitoes
The humid weather and the permanently warmer temperatures have given mosquitoes the ideal conditions to breed in large numbers.
You may have already noticed how annoying mosquitoes are.
Here are some tips on what you can do to prevent mosquito bites:
- Place mosquito nets over the bed/stroller
- Avoid standing water in the evening
- Fit insect screens to windows
- Empty rain barrels and watering cans so that no eggs are laid in them
- Wear light-colored, close-fitting clothing
- There are also plants and smells that are supposed to keep mosquitoes away: Geraniums, lemon balm, peppermint

What the letters M, N, O and P stand for in our Sonnen-Apotheken alphabet
M stands for breast pump in German.
We also lend breast pumps.
If you have a medical diagnosis, you can easily rent a breast pump from our pharmacy on prescription, which you can obtain from your gynecologist or pediatrician.
Your health insurance will cover the rental costs and you only have to pay a deposit.

N stands for emergency service in German.
We have an emergency service every one to two weeks.
The emergency service runs from 9.00 a.m. to 9.00 a.m. the next day.
Our pharmacists take turns on emergency duty.
Which pharmacy is on emergency duty and when is determined by the pharmacy chambers of the individual federal states.
Due to the density of pharmacies, pharmacies in larger cities have to provide significantly fewer emergency services than pharmacies in rural areas.
O stands for Offizin.
The dispensary is the sales room in the pharmacy where customers are advised.
The pharmacy is divided into
over-the-counter pharmacy (non-prescription medicines can be purchased here) and
over-the-counter (medicines can be purchased here without a prescription after consultation with the pharmacist = pharmacy-only medicines).
The term is derived from the Latin word "officina".
P stands for PTA.
PTA is the abbreviation for pharmaceutical technical assistant.

Training to become a PTA takes 2.5 years, of which 2 years are at school and the rest is practical training in the pharmacy. In addition, 160 hours of clinical traineeship (internship) must be completed. Important school subjects are pharmacology, galenics and chemistry.

Our Isabell has been working as a pharmacist in our pharmacy since 01.05.2022.
Before studying pharmacy, she first completed her training as a PTA (pharmaceutical technical assistant).

J stands for anniversary.
The Sonnen Apotheke was opened on August 13, 1963 by pharmacist Klaus Blümlein.
After 37 years, on January 2, 2001, the pharmacy was handed over to his son Ingo Blümlein.
Last year on 13.08.2023 we celebrated our 60th anniversary.
K stands for order picker.
Our order picker makes our daily work easier.
The medicines are put on the shelves by our order picker.
If necessary, he retrieves the packs for us. So he does his work quite independently.
There are around 13000 items stored in the individual compartments.
Our order picker is called Knut.
L stands for laboratory.
Every pharmacy has a laboratory where raw materials are tested for identity, purity and content & much more.

The letters E, F, G & H
E stands for Erlenmeyer flask.
The Erlenmeyer flask was named after the chemist Emil Erlenmeyer.
The Erlenmeyer flask is a laboratory glassware with a narrow cylindrical neck at the opening.
In our pharmacy, the glass vessel is used to mix different substances together or to check specific values of a solution by carrying out a titration.
F stands for free choice.
Free choice refers to all areas in the pharmacy that are freely accessible to you as a customer. The free choice area usually contains cosmetic products or medical products that are freely accessible and available without a prescription. You can take the products from the free choice area off the shelf yourself.
G stands for history.

The cupboard in which we store our stock items such as bandages and syringes has been refurbished
The original brown colour of the cabinet has now been transformed into a white colour through the wrapping

We would like to introduce you to some terms from our everyday pharmacy life and start with our pharmacy alphabet.
A stands for pharmacist.
To become a pharmacist, you have to study pharmacy.
The duration of the study is eight semesters, followed by twelve months of practical training and the pharmaceutical examination, which has to be taken in three parts.
We have 3 pharmacists employed.
B stands for messenger service.
The courier service will pick up prescriptions for you from the doctor and deliver the medicines to your home.

The first practices and facilities in the new medical care centre on the old site of the Moritz von Nassau barracks in Emmerich started operating on 1 October 2022.

We were creative. My colleague sewed little lavender bags from fabric scraps.
You can put them on your bed to promote sleep or hang them in your wardrobe as moth protection.
